Originally from Traverse City, Michigan, Dr. Gernhofer received his Bachelor of Science from Western Michigan University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a major in Biomedical Science. After receiving his dental degree from the School of Dentistry at the University of Michigan, Dr. Gernhofer served four years as a dentist in the US Navy.

Once he completed his General Practice Residency at the San Diego Naval Medical Center, Dr. Gernhofer became the Dental Department Head onboard the USS TORTUGA (LSD-46), a Naval warship stationed in Sasebo, Japan. After serving two years at sea, Dr. Gernhofer was assigned to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot San Diego as a staff dentist. During his time in the Navy, Dr. Gernhofer received numerous accolades including the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Today, Dr. Gernhofer is very passionate about public service and helping those in need. Having performed hundreds of dental procedures in rural areas throughout the world and currently working as a volunteer dentist with the UCSD Student-Run Free Dental Clinic Project, Dr. Gernhofer’s philanthropic enterprises make him one of the most sought after dentists in all of San Diego.
