Downtown dwellers rejoice; a stylish blow-out bar has finally arrived in our ‘hood.
BlowPop Dry Bar is a ‘wash & blow’ hair salon situated on the second level of Horton Plaza Mall, just a hot step away from Aldo Shoes. The woman behind the bar is Mickel Bohi, a former news producer who retired her career in television to tackle the beauty industry. BlowPop is now open seven days a week, with a grand opening soiree coming the last week in November.
Oversized black and white photographs fade into the walls, an ombre homage to classic coiffure looks of the past. Black hairdryers dangle above individual style stations, all facing mirrored walls. Black and gold décor is sprinkled through the salon, anchored by an infatuation-worthy gold chair in front.
BlowPop rocks an edgy aesthetic envisioned by Mauricio Couturier, a San Diego-based brand and concept design pro famous for the memorable interiors of Voyeur, Noble Experiment and El Camino. Locals familiar with the nightlife scene will sense a connection to goth-glam nightclub Voyeur. Many of the hair stylists look as if they could moonlight as VIP servers in the coffin suite. And for good reason; boss lady Bohi is married to Charles Davenport, co-owner of Voyeur.
As a ‘wash & blow’ bar, BlowPop doesn’t do cut or color. Seven signature blow-outs are on the menu, including Sultry Bardot, Straight to the Point, Curls Are A Girl’s Best Friend and the Audrey Up-Do. The wash, blow-dry and style combinations are priced at $35. Included in the price is a wash using high-quality products. BlowPop carries the Living Proof haircare line which is endorsed by Oprah Winfrey and co-owned by new investor Jennifer Aniston.
More good news for downtown residents and visitors, you can request ‘BlowPop On The Go’ and have a stylist come to your home or hotel room within a 20 mile radius for a $75 charge.
The easy and affordable blow-out bar trend hit San Diego the summer of 2011 with industry leader Drybar’s debut in Del Mar, followed by the opening of Naturale Hair Blows in La Jolla.
