Fitness Craze: Pilates Plus in Pacific Beach

Posted On : 1/18/2012 by Ryan Eisenacher

The secret workout of some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities has finally arrived in San Diego. Recently selected as ‘Studio of the Month’ by lululemon athletica La Jolla, the all-new Pilates Plus Pacific Beach is giving the standard gym routine a run for its money.

Before you think Pilates Plus PB is another one of those overpriced studios with simplistic workout routines, I suggest you check your misconceptions at the door. This high energy workout is nowhere near your grandmother’s Pilates exercises or the infomercial DVDs that continuously repeat the same lackluster moves.

Over two years ago, San Diego Channel 6 weather forecaster, Kimi Evans, was introduced to the ground breaking Pilates Plus workout and it forever changed her life.

“I have suffered from chronic back pain for years and tried nearly every possible workout with no avail,” says Evans. “It wasn’t until I discovered the art of the SPX Pilates Plus workout system that I was able to finally relieve tension and strengthen my back.”

With an MBA from Seattle University and advanced certifications for both weight training and Pilates, celebrity fitness instructor Sebastien Lagree pioneered the first Pilates Plus Studio in September of 2001 and quickly gained popularity amongst Hollywood's elite. The highly applauded SPX Pilates Plus workout routine has been featured on ET, E! News, Extra, Access Hollywood and has an elite celebrity clientele following including Nicole Kidman, Brooke Burke, Sheryl Crow, Elizabeth Hurley, Ben Stiller, and more.

This innovative and effective fitness method is the optimal workout for individuals who want to quickly achieve a sleek, defined physique. Largely based on the holistic principles of Pilates, SPX incorporates elements of strength training and cardio regimens not inherent to Pilates to achieve muscle definition faster than traditional Pilates and/or weight training alone. Best of all, these incredibly efficient and effective classes take as little as 40 minutes.

Soon after discovering the positive attributes of the praised Pilates Plus workout, Evans introduced her friend Yoko Druten and she too instantaneously fell in love. Together the duo decided to open their own studio in hopes to share their love of fitness with others and offer fitness-focused individuals an exciting and innovative way to burn calories and have fun at the same time.

At the core of the SPX training method is the Proformer, which represents a significant evolution of the traditional Pilates reformer. It is designed to cater to both upper and lower body muscles, using a system of springs and pulleys to accommodate the resistance and counter-resistance elements of the workout. Under the guidance of a solidly skilled Pilates Plus instructor – and to the tune of loud, get-your-blood-pumping music – the SPX workout tones and elongates the muscles, improves endurance, jump-starts the metabolism, burns fat, increases flexibility and postural alignment, and restores the body’s natural balance.

Whether you like to get your fitness fix in the morning or evening, Pilates Plus PB offers a wide variety of 10 person SPX group classes seven days a week. Choose from the SPX Total Body Rock Out, complete with loud, high-energy music; the SPX Body Technique & Beginner Class, perfect for newbies and individuals who want to spend more time focusing on proper form; the SPX Total Body Stretch Class focused on stretching, lengthening, and toning; or the traditional SPX Total Body 40 minute workout which incorporates body toning and strength training exercises on the Proformer to fun, upbeat music.

New Classes at Pilates Plus: Get your sculpt on with three new classes for all levels! Brutal Barre with Tanu kicks butt with some serious barre and sculpting work. This high-intensity class will leave everyone sweating up a storm. The Mommy & Beginner Class is intended for Pre/Post-Natal women. Participants are also welcome to bring babies, daddies, and experience a slow-paced class with other mommies and mommies-to-be. And at Bootcamp, anything goes in this 40-minute hard-core intense, fat-burning workout integrating SPX, TRX, Cardio, Weight Training and more.

Join Pilates Plus PB today and see what all the hype is about! Unlike many of the Pilates studios around, Pilates Plus prides itself on affordability and variety of membership options. For the discounted price of $179 per month, members get access to unlimited classes, a regular $199 value. Or, sign-up now and receive the first month for only $139. If you aren’t ready to fully commit, Pilates Plus offers a $139 monthly membership, which includes two group classes per week; or a $79 monthly membership for one group class per week. Classes do not carry over to future weeks and must be used up each week. All memberships require a three-month commitment.

Group packages are also available in 5, 10, or 20 packs. These do not automatically renew and they do not require a commitment.

Pilates Plus PB is located at 1015 Turquoise Street, Suite 1 at the intersection of Cass and Turquoise in Pacific Beach. The studio is open Monday through Friday from 6am-8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9am-2pm. For more information, please visit Pilates Plus in Pacific Beach
