Health Spotlight: Dr. Andrew DeMeyer of Mission Blvd Dental

Posted On : 6/20/2011 by Ryan Eisenacher

There are a few things in life more naturally beautiful than a sparkling, brilliant white smile. But let’s be honest here, the only way to stay on track of your dental health is to make regular visits to your local San Diego dentist.

Mission Boulevard Dental Group believes that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health, which is why they provide every client with exceptional care while enhancing the natural beauty of your smile with conservative, state-of-the-art procedures.

We sat down with Dr. Andrew DeMeyer of Mission Boulevard Dental Group to get the inside scoop on his background in dentistry, the common misconceptions people have about their teeth, how he puts his patients at ease, and some of his tips for daily oral care. Get to know Dr. DeMeyer in this week's San Diego health spotlight.

DiscoverSD: Tell us a little about your background. How did you get involved in dentistry?

Dr. Andrew DeMeyer: My Dad was a dentist. I loved his stories when he came home from work. I also love to create and the esthetic aspects to dentistry really allow me to indulge that.

DSD: What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Dr. DeMeyer: The people. The practice was established in 1952 and we now have three generations of patients here. It really has become an extended family and a true family practice. I love it!

DSD: What services do you offer at Mission Blvd Dental?

Dr. DeMeyer: The gamut, from preventative and periodontal therapy (teeth cleaning, diagnostic examination, digital radiographic examination, root scaling), general restorative (basic fillings and crowns), implant restoration (replacement of missing tooth on a surgically placed titanium sleeve), cosmetics (porcelain veneers, and all-ceramic zirconia crowns), removable prosthetics (dentures and partial dentures), endodontic (root canals), and oral surgery (routine extractions).

DSD: Many people dread going to the dentist. How do you put your patients at ease?

Dr. DeMeyer: By treating everyone like family, emphasizing patient education, and a lot of TLC. Ultimately, when a patient can see and know why something needs to be done, understands how it can be remedied, and that you really care about them, they generally feel a lot more at ease.

DSD: What is the most common misconception that people have about their teeth?

Dr. De Meyer:  That they’ll last a lifetime, regardless of what they do to them.

DSD: Most people don’t floss as often as they should? Why is it important to use dental floss and what is the proper way to floss?

Dr. DeMeyer: Floss gets to places that a tooth brush can’t! I try to have people pull the floss through between the teeth rather than snap it up and down...you get more mud out that way.

DSD: What are some of your tips for daily oral care?

Dr. DeMeyer: Eat all the chocolate that you want! But brush after every meal, especially well before you go to bed, and spend at least two minutes during each session when you do. Keep your routine “routine and simple” so that you just “do it” and don’t blow it off.

I’m a single mom and I have 2 kids who both needed dental braces. I make just enough to not qualify Medicaid services so I can’t get free dental and medical services for the kids. I had to pay over $4800 so that my child can have braces and a beautiful smile. . .She was very scared and timid at school. I couldn’t find anyone in Los Angeles who would do the braces at a normal price so I had to launch find it with free services like http://www.healthsouk.com (HealthSouk- the dental discount plan or discounted dentistry) and www.1800dentist.com (800 dentist) The first one was free and the second apparently charges the dentist but not me - Jenny Thomas
