New Years Resolution Solutions: Escape Your Workout Rut

To discover the ultimate fitness advice for 2009 New Year's resolutions, we sat down with Sean Piazza - Fitness Director at Lava Sport and Fitness Point Loma at Liberty Station. If you're a regular at the gym but stuck in a stagnant and unproductive workout rut, listen up and take notes from the expert.


Resolution: I've been working out regularly over the past year, but now I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. My regular workout routine of cardio and strength training used to work, but now I'm bored of it and feel like I am no longer pushing myself. This year I want to find a new regiment that keeps me on my toes and gets me into the best shape of my life.


Sean Piazza's Solution: I get this comment a lot, and I always tell people how important it is to mix up your workout routines to keep your body guessing and your mind stimulated. I always encourage people who feel stuck and uninspired to dive into our Power Boxing and/or Power Kickboxing classes because they offer a fantastic high-impact cardio workout.


What is especially unique about these classes is that each of our boxing/kickboxing instructors run drills in entirely different and distinct ways, so your body is constantly challenged. In addition, these classes incorporate strength training intervals in between drills, such as pushups, lunges, and sprints in order to constantly test your fitness levels and keep your heart rate up.


To re-invigorate a tired strength training routine, I recommend taking our Gravity Group classes, which use resistance training on a freely moving glide board to simultaneously target both lower and upper body muscle groups and core stabilizers to provide a full-body conditioning workout.
