To discover the ultimate fitness advice for 2009 New Year's resolutions, we sat down with Sean Piazza - Fitness Director at Lava Sport and Fitness Point Loma at Liberty Station. If you're a new (or new-again) mom trying to shed the last of your baby weight and get your body back in shape, listen up and take notes from the expert.
Resolution: I used to have time for fitness, but now that I have two toddlers running around, my sole means of working out is chasing them around. Since having my second child I've been unable to lose the baby weight. This year I want to lose twenty pounds, tone up and feel happy about the way my body looks again.
Sean Piazza: The most common excuse that mothers have for not working out is that they don't have anyone to watch their children. One of the great things we offer to our members is our Fit Kids Club, in partnership with San Diego Gymnastics. You can drop off your kids and have the chance to work out at Lava while your kids are involved in fitness-oriented activities, all under the supervision of San Diego Gymnastics highly certified coaches.
With the kids taken care of, you can now focus on your weight loss goals. Pilates is a favorite amongst moms looking to tighten their tummies, tone up and create long lean muscles. As a member of Lava you have free access to Pilates classes all day, and for a more personalized Pilates workout on the equipment, where a certified Pilates instructor can work on your specific goals, we have an on-site private Pilates studio for one-on-one training.
In addition to Pilates two or three times per week, I advise 30 to 45 minutes of cardio training at least three times a week. It is also important to monitor your caloric intake and maintain a healthy diet in order to lose weight. I know that having kids poses a greater chance of there being junk food around, so make it a habit to keep healthy snacks in the fridge.
