Local Couples Spotlight: Mikey and Jenny Beats

Michael Beltran and Jenny Kuczwara, better known as Mikey and Jenny Beats, are a couple of San Diego locals who caught the eye of the community this year.

It’s hard not to notice this couple; they’re bubbling with energy and affection for one another, have more friends and admirers than one could ever hope for, and are newly engaged after 13 years together. When not DJ’ing in San Diego, Mikey Beats spoils his fiancé with such outdoor adventures as bike rides and kayaking, as well as romantic trips to Mexico and New York City.

Jenny adores her high-profile man for his huge smile and outgoing personality, and thinks the relationship works because they encourage each other to be who they truly are as individuals – even if that means taking your pants off at parties.

From how Mikey stole Jenny from his best friend in high school to the countdown to the city’s first baby Beats, get to know these local lovers in our San Diego Couples Spotlight.

DSD: How’d you guys meet?
Mikey: It's quite the fairy tale beginning to an epic romantic saga of love, snuggling and fist pumping.

I was at a friend’s house in Clairemont when Jenny walked in the door, sat next to me and started the small talk. We hit it off because first impressions mean everything, and hers of mine must have been good because after almost 13 years, we are still together.

Jenny: We met at a high school party. I was a junior at UC High and he was a senior at Clairemont High. He was hitting on me while I was on a date with his best friend! At first I thought he was very strange but he made me laugh. He got my number from a friend of mine and asked me out on a date to play slosh ball. The rest is history!

Mikey: I remember telling her that I knew who she was. She didn't believe me, but I followed it up by telling her she was the one I would spend the rest of my life with.

DSD: What 3 things do you love about your partner?
Jenny: Mike’s HUGE, GINORMOUS smile! I love his outgoing, fun personality (there’s never a dull moment). I also value his creativity and open-mindedness.

Mikey: Jenny's laughter is contagious. I find myself trying to make her laugh so I can laugh at her laughing at me. She is so patient and understanding. She still believes in Santa and Elves.

DSD: What are your 3 biggest differences?
Mikey: I am large, she is small. I smell bad, she smells good. I look awesome, she looks amazing.

Jenny: Punctuality, academics, and I keep my pants on at parties.

DSD: In one sentence, explain why it works.
Jenny: We allow and encourage each other to be who we are as individuals.

Mikey: To compromise is to make a deal where someone gives up part of, or all of its demand.

DSD: What was your most romantic evening together?


Jenny: We were on the beach in Tulum, Mexico. It was a beautiful night – warm ocean water and a warm breeze. The entire beach was empty: It was just me, Mike, and a bottle of tequila.

Mikey: I would have to say that being in New York this past winter, staying in Times Square and kissing under the Rocker feller Center's Tree.

DSD: What are your favorite things to do together?
Jenny: I love traveling all over the world with Mike. In San Diego, we love doing fun, outdoor activities together. We go for bike rides along the bay, surf, swim, kayak, and go for walks. Oh ya, and snuggling!

Mikey: Laugh, giggle, snicker, hoot, holler, smile, snuggle, massage and fart.

DSD: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Mikey: 3 kids deep and wondering how I pulled such an amazing woman.

Jenny: I definitely see us living happily married in San Diego, maybe with a little baby Beats or two.
