Location is Everything in the San Diego Dating Scene

Published : 10/18/2007 by Nick McCann

When it comes to dating in San Diego, location is everything. A great place can give a living, breathing context for a couple's feelings. It can be a La Jolla restaurant, a North Park bar, or a certain spot in Balboa Park. In any case, if two people can agree a place is significant, then that place becomes sacred for the life of the relationship. And that sacredness only grows with time, even if the relationship ends.

If a couple meets at a bar like The Beachcomber in Pacific Beach - say the guy sent over shot of water as a way to get to the girl's heart by being cocky-funny - the couple can always go back to celebrate their anniversary with a shot of water.

If the same guy takes the girl to Dublin Square in Downtown San Diego, stands up in the middle of dinner, and sings the first verse to Boys 2 Men's "Water Runs Dry"(which works every time), the slightly overpriced boxty pancakes will always remind her of the way he was able to make a fool of himself by bringing the house down, even when the bartender messed up the harmony.

However, when a place becomes significant in a relationship, it ups the emotional stakes. If our girl is out with some girlfriends at the AC Lounge in North Park, and she overhears another girl describing a charming guy buying her a shot of water at "their" Beachcomber, it can arouse suspicion. And it could force our girl to follow her man to the Gaslamp Quarter, where he's supposed to be going out with the guys - only to find him walking into Dublin Square with the same girl from the AC lounge bathroom.

Sometimes you have to destroy something to save it. Not to suggest that getting burned in a relationship gives you the right to burn down an establishment, but if you get hurt and you end up hating the other person, you can always go back to your special place and cancel them out with someone new.
