Meet San Diego Singles: Gym Rats Don't Dig for Gold

Published : 10/22/2009 by Michelle Guerin

The results are in! According to Match.com, San Diego singles are not turned on by money, hit the gym more than 5 times a week and would rather help a friend than save the planet.

San Diego is full of bright and beautiful men and women, and yes, many of them are still single! Match.com recently surveyed San Diego members about a wide variety of dating topics and the stats are very interesting, to say the least. We are obsessed with fitness and are more turned on by tattoos and thunderstorms than money. That is just awesome.

From how we feel about the economic crisis to how we rate our bodies and what we really think about charitable acts, get to know our San Diego singles.

Gold-Diggers Need Not Apply: Despite the current economic crisis, Match members actually view money as the smallest turn-on. Considering California's 12.1 percent unemployment rate (as of August), this is great news! It seems that money isn’t the way to people’s hearts – in fact, sarcasm, tattoos and thunderstorms are bigger turn-ons that money.

San Diego: only 2.77% are turned on by money
LA: only 2.99% are turned on by money
San Francisco: only 2.35% are turned on by money
Miami: only 3.15% are turned on by money

Gym Rats: Of all four cities, San Diego singles on Match hit the gym most often (more than five times a week!).

San Diego: 21.18% go to the gym 5 or more times per week
LA: 17.41% go to the gym 5 or more times per week
San Francisco: 18.33% go to the gym 5 or more times per week
Miami: 16.46% go to the gym 5 or more times per week

Body Types: In San Diego, almost 70 percent of Match members classify their body types as either “about average” or “athletic and toned.” In comparison, only 13.66 percent of Match members in San Diego consider themselves “slender.”

San Diego: about average = 34.61%; athletic/toned = 34.72%; slender = 13.66%
LA: about average = 33.38%; athletic and toned = 33.17%; slender = 17.19%
San Francisco: about average = 32.67%; athletic/toned = 34.90%; slender = 17.47%
Miami: about average = 34.99%; athletic and toned = 31.49%; slender = 15.85%

Inconvenient Truth: Despite what we see in movies and in pop culture, when asked what type of charity they favor, more people are more interested in “helping people” than in “saving the planet.”

San Diego: help people = 63.58%; save planet = 9.00%
LA: help people = 65.30%; save planet = 8.42%
San Francisco: help people = 65.52%; save planet = 10.22%
Miami: help people = 62.71%; save planet = 6.63%

Only Children: In all four cities, only children make up the lowest percentage of Match members.

San Diego: 7.47% are only children
LA: 8.89% are only children
San Francisco: 8.08% are only children
Miami: 9.21% are only children

Money

I was happy to see that money is unimportant to San Diegans until I read that LA only registered 0.22% higher. Talk about a questionable figure, I've spent plenty of time in LA and they live for money and material possessions. Oh well, stats or not I still think the people here are pretty great.
