When looking for a date in San Diego, a good rule of thumb is to know what type of person you're looking for, then go to go where that type of person is likely to be thus improving your chances of meeting a good prospect.
For example: If you happen to be looking for someone artsy - go to a gallery opening, a marathoner - check out a running club, and for flexibility - sign up for a yoga class.
Whole Foods Market is the world's leading retailer of natural and organic foods. They cater to an upscale clientele interested in high quality, environmentally responsible and health conscious products. They also score high on just being tasty.
The La Jolla Whole Foods store is betting that many local singles in San Diego are looking for like minded individuals for long term relationships, and they would like to meet them in a safe, healthy environment (read: not a bar). Therefore they are inviting locals to “be single and mingle" at the store's 3rd annual Single's Night on February 8, 2008 from 7:30-9pm.
It's only $5 to participate. Your entry fee includes a variety of wine, chocolates, and a sampling of tasty treats straight from the bakery. So basically, you shop as normal but with a lot more free samples and available singles. Go ahead and pick up the products being featured in preparation for the date - they've thought it out for you. As for meeting people, that's up to you. Be outgoing, start up conversations about the samples and be sure to exchange contact info. Maybe you can meet again for a shopping date in the future.
