In the year 2008, the age of metrosexuals and botox, it's time for men to take responsibility for their appearance. And by responsibility, I do not mean you must go out and get waxed, pretty and primped.
However, we do request you take the initiative to look your best. By following simple rules of health and hygiene - no longer will we hesitate to hold your hand, kiss your cheek, or run our fingers through your hair.
Skin Care and Facial Hair
Pre-shave: Wash with a cleanser for your skin type. If your skin is dry and/or prone to ingrown hairs, use a scrub with an exfoliant to loosen follicles before your shave.
Wet shaving steps: Rinse or wash face with warm water to open your pores. Massage cream or gel upward, going against the grain of the hair. Use just enough product to soften the hair and make your shave easier. Using long even strokes with sharp blade, shave with the growth of your hair in a downward motion. Short strokes against the grain of the hair can be used on the chin and neck for a closer shave and smoother result. After, rinse with cold water to close pores and follow with a moisturizer that is right for your skin type.
Electric shaving tips: Don't wash your face first, but do use a prep product made especially for electric shavers. Be sure to use light pressure in any direction you wish, as it doesn't matter if you go with or against the grain of the hair when using an electric razor. Rinse your face after and pat it dry, do not rub. Be sure to use a moisturizer post- electric shave to quench dry skin.
Eyebrows: If you do need to pluck your eyebrows, make sure not to go overboard; less is more. A common issue with plucking is the bumps or infection that can result. Before plucking, be sure to wash face thoroughly. After, swipe the area with an alcohol soaked cotton ball, and then rinse to close pores and prevent irritation.
Hair: When it comes to a man's hair, the cut is crucial. It is important to emphasize the importance of a scissor cut, as opposed to a trimmer. Scissor cuts improve the look and texture of hair, and make for more effective styling. Hair products are important, too. When in doubt, asking your stylist is always the best option. No one knows your hair better.
Nails: Even if you're not the metro manicure-type, clean and smooth nails are still required. There are only two simple tools you need: soap and a file. Wash hands thoroughly and clean under nails. Then, file down clean nails leaving only a small edge of white at the tips.
Teeth: Clean white teeth are a must for men, and luckily, daily brushing and flossing are usually all you will need. If you do have stains or yellowing, pick up a whitening product at the local drug store. If you are prepping for a date and don't have time to get to the store, a quick and affordable alternative is baking soda. Just sprinkle baking soda on top of your normal toothpaste as an exfoliant and brush vigorously. For extra shine, follow a hydrogen peroxide dipped Q-tip across the fronts of your visible teeth.
