Springing Back and Moving On

Published : 2/26/2008 by Loxie Gant

As women, we have an arguable genetic flaw that prevents us from just sucking it up and moving on after a relationship has dissolved.

It seems like men can just go out to have a few beers with their buddies and move on. We, however, have own way of digesting heartbreak and moving on. More often than not, the one thing we need most is time. This ambiguous and torturous time of relationship rehab can be daunting, sometimes even socially paralyzing.

As a coach for dating in San Diego, I have spent countless sessions helping my clients to overcome the depression/anger/sadness that can result from a broken heart. Below I have compiled my most successful secrets to speeding up that emotional recovery time by giving you specific tools to begin taking active control of your life and your heart. Cheers to springing back and moving on this spring in San Diego.

Write it out

It is really easy for us to pretend like we are over someone, but, more often than not, there are a lot of unanswered questions and second guesses. Save the money you would spend on a shrink and just go buy a cute new journal at your favorite bookstore. Pick up a pen before you go to bed (or just whenever you are a feeling sad) and write it out. The process of writing and then going back and reading it later is an amazing way to relieve that weight off your shoulders. Sometimes - it can even be helpful to write a faux letter to your ex that you will never actually give them. It really helps to blow off a little steam and can be good for the soul.

The Me List.

While we are in relationships, it is easy to lose focus on the things that make you happy. I suggest making a "Me List" of the activities, hobbies, and passions that make up who you are. Maybe even add in the things that you wish to accomplish in the near future. Write it out and then tape it on your mirror, next to your computer screen, or on the fridge. Now that you are single, it is time to put the focus back on you and do what you want.

A New Look.

Chapters of our lives are defined by indefinite periods of time. One way to shake things up for women is to change your look or style. A simple hairstyle or hair color change might just be the jumpstart you need. If you look different on the outside, you will begin to feel different on the inside. Another option is splurging on a hot new pair of stilettos to wear on your next girls' night out. This will add a spark to your strut and will guarantee a few looks at the club. In the famous words of Carrie Bradshaw, "The fact is, sometimes it's really hard to walk in a single woman's shoes. That's why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun."
