The Single State: Plague or Opportunity?

Published : 9/9/2008 by DeAnna Lorraine

People always seem to think of being single as a 'plague' of sorts, viewing it as a lonely, undesirable state that they want to change as soon as humanely possible.

Many will avoid the state of being single in San Diego, often staying in relationships way longer than they should, frantically trying to get in a relationship, and not fully enjoying their lives. But while relationships are indeed wonderful, being single can offer a unique advantage; you have the freedom and flexibility to live the life you want, how you want and where you want.

The 'single state' can instead be thought of as a valuable opportunity to focus on aspects of our lives that we couldn't or didn't have time to before, such as accomplishing our professional and personal goals, trying new things, rediscovering ourselves and our passions and figuring out what we really want and going after it. Remember 'you?' So, rather than feeling lonely and panicked when you're single, or leaping headlong into another romance, slow down, improve yourself as a person, and enjoy the fun and freedom you are granted, because it could be gone before you know it.

If you're going to be single, there's really no better place to live than San Diego. Here are some things for San Diego singles to try to help you make the most of The Single State:

1. Take some exercise classes, either solo or with friends. Try boxing at Pacific Beach Boxing, or a dance cardio class. Check out the best boutique gyms in San Diego here.

2. Join some social networks or groups, like iHappyHours, Friday Nights Out, and VAVi games and events, an excellent sports and social club. Check out Meetup.com for a wide variety of local interest groups, from sailing to scuba diving. Get more entertainment here.

3. Make a weekly ritual with friends to look forward to, such as Monday night football at the new Bare Back Grill or bowling at East Village Tavern. Find more nightlife spots here.
