The North Park Vintage Music Festival on Sunday, July 20th starting at noon and ending at 8pm, is slated to be one of the most unique events to hit the already inimitable area.
Inspired by the neighborhood's historic art deco buildings, like the old North Park Theatre (now fronted by the ever classy restaurant Hawthorn's), the Silver Gate Masonic Lodge, and the North Park Baptist Church, this event will be promoting all things vintage in North Park. Come shop antiques from the ‘80s and back, dazzle your eyes with vintage styles while models strut various fashion show stages, take in photography, and remember old movies.
Originally a lemon grove, North Park earned its name and small neighborhood fame in the early 20th century when the first structure, now the Western Dental building was erected. Monikered as an "urban village" and symbolically known as "Thirtieth and University" since 1912, North Park lives up to its name with a mix of architectural styles and eclectic denizens.
These streets have absorbed over ninety-six years of foot traffic and sidewalk stories, hosting art events like Ray at Night, the weekly Farmer's Market, a smattering of independent coffee shops, boutiques, and delicious vegan-option food. Signature businesses include Auntie Helen's thrift store, which funds a laundry service for people living with HIV and AIDS; Pat's Furniture which houses some of the coolest yet cheapest second-hand furniture; and the notorious Claire de Lune's run by two of the neighborhood's sassiest women. North Park is a neighborhood teeming with distinct personality, and this vintage festival only augments the spirit flowing down University and Thirtieth.
Vendors will be set up along Utah Street selling merchandise from years past as well as food and crafts from modern day. And there's just something so intriguing about vintage finds, especially clothes; the styles from past eras often transcend time bringing you pieces that no one else has but you.
The 2008 North Park Vintage Music Festival is an all-ages event - running from noon to 8pm, and is free to the public, so you have no excuse not to discover what North Park is all about.
