Two miles may seem like a stretch, but when Adams Avenue transforms from a street to a showcase of local music and local artists: this is one walk you’ll want to take. On Saturday June 4, experience Art Around Adams, the annual Normal Heights and Kensington festival exhibiting some of San Diego’s finest artists and musicians. With this year’s theme being Art Evolved!: visit shops along Adams as they open doors and transform into art galleries and visual and live performance arenas. Nestled between Oregon and Vista streets, stroll on and discover what this mid-city district has to offer.
From 3 p.m to 10 p.m. explore the eclectic artsy design studios or venture through the vintage and antique store fronts at this free and fun-for-all art and culture festival. With art gallery showcases by artists such as Shay Davis and Rich Walker, explore the interactive community mural hosted by San Diego Art Link and be sure to walk through the mazes of art installations utilizing parking lots and empty spaces along Adams. Discover El Zarape, Café 21, and the Sk8 Box as they become the makeshift stage for the local band line-up. Find parking anywhere around Adams Avenue between Normal Heights and Kensington, and hop aboard the complimentary “Comedy Trolley” to get shuttled to the event in style and cruise up and down the avenue while being entertained. An information booth will be located at 3441 Adams Avenue where you can pick up an Art on Adams map that will help you navigate your way.
What began as a small neighborhood open house has drawn more than 10,000 since its beginning in 2004. Come out and discover the organically rich up and coming art and music scene in San Diego at this unique event. Some of the music acts to be hitting the stage are Todo Mundo, Secret Seven, Wendy Bailey & True Stories, Gayle Skidmore, SO3, Dave Humphries, The Old In Out, amongst many more.
Sponsored by Exodus Studios, Art on Adams benefits the Optimists International Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides funding for the charitable, literary and educational purposes of Optimist International, an organization committed to creating a more optimistic future for young people through innovative programs.
