Game On: Over The Line Tournament

It’s that time of year again, San Diegans! No, I am not talking about the time of year where you pull out those bikinis and board shorts from the back of the drawer and realize that you wish you had spent more time in the gym preparing your beach body. It is time for OMBAC’s annual Over The Line Tournament.

OMBAC stands for Old Mission Beach Athletic Club and every summer this institution hosts an Over The Line Tournament where 1,200, 3 person teams will play an adapted version of softball with proceeds benefiting the community and local charities.

Don’t be fooled, this is no regular game of softball. Each team only has three players and unlike softball, the hitter and pitcher are part of the same team. Instead of regular uniforms, teams can be seen wearing unique costumes, from sexy ladybugs to “mammogram doctors” to the good ole barely there bikini.  Team names are also creative aspects of the game and usually have adult connotations that will have no problem bringing your mind to the gutter like an eighth grade boy in health class.

The tournament will return this year for its 58th year on the weekends of July 9 & July 16, and although team sign ups are already full, there is still a lot of fun to be had and viewing admission is free. This event advertises “beer, babes, and bats on the beach” and alcohol and adult humor will be in abundant supply so this is not that “fun for the whole family” event you were looking for, and children under age 18 are not permitted on this Fiesta Island celebration. This is the one event where the alcohol ban on San Diego beaches does not apply. Score!
