The lineup, announced Monday afternoon, also includes Swedish House Mafia, The Shins, the reunited At The Drive-In, Florence + The Machine, David Guetta, Pulp, Feist, Justice, Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow and dozens more. Other reunited bands on the 2012 Coachella lineup include Squeeze, Buzzcocks and Madness.
This marks the first year that Coachella will be expanded from one weekend in April to two consecutive weekends, April 13-15 and April 20-22, with the same lineup appearing both weekends.
After a shaky start in 1999 and several years of financial losses thereafter, the festival at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio has become one of the most popular and well-attended in the world. The expansion to two weekends this year was prompted by the enormous ticket demand last year.
The 2011 festival sold-out all 90,000 of its three-day weekend passes in just six days, a record time that surprised even Goldenvoice, the Los Angeles concert production company that puts on Coachella and Stagecoach, the country-music festival held at the same location in Indio.
Tickets for the 2012 festival went on sale nearly a year in advance of this year's event, with three-day passes going on sale in June -- for one week only -- on the Coachella web site. This marked the first time that tickets went on sale without any of the performers being announced first.
In a statement last year that explained the expansion of the festival, Goldenvoice said: "In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, Coachella 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.
"We know many of you were unable to attend this year's (2011) festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com."
