It’s not SeaWorld, and it’s not the beach babes. It’s the innovative craft beer scene that has put San Diego on the map as a national treasure.
As a major craft beer capital and one of the most visited beer cities in the country, we have much to toast to year after year. And while the beer scene grows, so does our need for celebration. San Diego Beer Week returns from November 2-11 for a blurry and beer-breathed lineup of over 500 events across the county.
No judgment here; San Diego Beer Week is the time to applaud the extensive breweries and supportive community we live and play in. And while it’s called Beer Week, the parties actually span across ten days of craft brew tasting, paired with some of San Diego’s best gourmet grub. Ready to drink? Thought so. Go beyond your comforts and sip on something new, or explore a new hot spot playing host to one of the many events.
The San Diego Brewers Guild Festival kicks off the festivities on Saturday, November 3. Held at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, this daytime drinking bash is the place for thousands of beer enthusiasts to down more than 100 of San Diego’s finest award-winning beers paired with food, music, entertainment and fun. Mayor Jerry Sanders and Sam the Cooking Guy will give the grand tapping of the first keg and partake in the activities from 1 to 5pm. Tickets are $35.
For the rest of Beer Week, we’ll be busy getting schooled on our regional brewing heritage and on just how immersed the local breweries, restaurants and pubs are in the craft beer movement. Beer Week will feature all of San Diego’s premier craft breweries, including Stone Brewing Co., Karl Strauss Brewing Co., Coronado Brewing Co., Aztec Brewing Co., Iron Fist Brewing Co., Lost Abbey, Ballast Point, AleSmith, Green Flash, Mission Brewery and more.
We’ve got our eyes on a few can’t-miss events happening between November 2 and 11. On our radar is Meet the Stone Brewer at Glass Door on Nov. 5 with special release beers and a spectacular view of the bay; a five-course dinner with beer pairings and discussion with Stone Brewing Co.’s craft beer ambassador “Dr.” Bill Sysak at Slater’s 50/50 on Nov. 5; Best of Belgium Beer Pairing: A Farm to Taps Dinner at ginger’s on Nov. 6; Ballast Point Beer vs. Wine Election Night at Urge Gastropub on Nov. 6; Firestone Tap Takeover at Union Kitchen & Tap on Nov. 8 with a special cask and keep-the-pint night; “Hops N Heels” at The Pearl Hotel on Nov. 8 created just for women with desserts paired with Stone beers; Sour & Rare Beer Night at Pizza Port Ocean Beach on Nov. 9; Beer & James Bond Movie Night at the brand new ArcLight Cinemas on Nov. 10; or Veteran’s Day Cider Dinner with Julian Hard Cider at Sea Rocket Bistro on Nov. 11. You can also get your Beer Week on at local hot-spots like Hamilton’s Tavern, Sessions Public, Small Bar, El Take it Easy, Ritual Tavern, The Public House La Jolla and many more craft beer bars around town.
If you rally all the way to the end of the week, beer-champs have one last hoorah held at The Lodge at Torrey Pines on Sunday, November 11. This ticketed finale affair will pair specialty beer with gourmet food from some of San Diego’s top culinary artists and brew masters. Chef and brewery combos to try include Paul McCabe of Delicias with Stumblefoot Brewing and Stone Brewing Company; Anthony Sinsay of Burlap with Karl Strauss Brewing Company and Aztec Brewing Company; Kyle Bergman of Ritual Tavern with Societe Brewing and New English Brewing Company; and Hanis Cavin of Carnitas Snack Shack with Rock Bottom Brewery La Jolla and Green Flash Brewing Company, among many others. No need to choose your favorites; your ticket gets you unlimited access to all the beer and food. Tickets are $75 per person.
