Art After Dark: Dr. Steampunk's Art Extravaganza

Posted On : 10/25/2010 by Zoheb Davar

If you are an avid San Diego art enthusiast looking for an unusual entertainment experience, the Oceanside Museum of Art is your ideal destination on Friday, November 5th.

The Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) will be creating a fantastical world filled with inventions, sculptures and technological developments during the latest Art After Dark event entitled Dr. Steampunk’s Art Extravaganza featuring exhibit Vintage Futurism.

Just imagine the outlook of the future in Britain during the Victorian Era; Steampunk is a fusion of science fiction and fantasy based in a steam-powered world. As the name suggests, Vintage Futurism is a related style that brings a futuristic genre together with a retro-lifestyle; think “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and “The Rocketeer” set in the 1930s.

Style-conscious Diana Drake and Enigma Fashions will host a Steampunk Fashion Show with a heavy gothic and Victorian influence. Check out their unique designs at enigmafashions.com. DJ Robin Roth and Danny Massure will be spinning on the one’s and two’s all night long, and special guest artists Kim Moody and Lisa Hutton will display site-specific Steampunk inspired videos while artist David Joseph Gough paints live and Greg Brotherton exhibits a ten-foot tall stainless steel outdoor sculpture. To quench your cultural thirst, the Lost Abbey Brewing Company will provide local craft beer in addition to specialty wine and tasty hors d’oeuvres from The Fish Joint. This interactive event is sure to be a unique experience for all art aficionados and admirers alike. After getting your fair share of extraordinary Steampunk art and fashion, head to the activity room and allow your inner artist to emerge by designing your very own Steampunk sculpture!

The action-packed Dr. Steampunk’s Art Extravaganza takes place on Friday, November 5th from 7 – 10pm the Oceanside Museum of Art. Admission is $25, ($20 for OMA members). OMA welcomes guests 21+ to Art After Dark. ID required. For additional information please call 760.435.3720 or visit oma-online.org
