I've always been a fan of the classic film "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." When I was a kid, it was a family tradition to make a fire in the fireplace, stir up some hot cocoa and gather around the set for the good annual dose of rhyming Christmas spirit.
Max the dog was always my favorite.
When I was in college, I was offered the opportunity to be an usher for The Old Globe Theater, as they invited elementary school kids from all over San Diego to enjoy the theater performance. This elevated Grinch experience begins before you even enter the theater, as the courtyard is decorated with unmistakably Seusical characters from Whoville, and even the Grinch himself.
Once inside it was edge-of-their-tiny-seat excitement for these kids, with wide eyed gasps and cheers through the whole show. To this day- that is my favorite memory of the Grinch. Watching The Grinch with children (for whom it was intended) in a live stage musical brings you back to your childhood. You get caught up in childish wonder and joy. I can only imagine what it's like to experience the Globe show with your own children.
From November 25 to December 30, invite your children, nephews, nieces, and neighbors to the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park to start up own family tradition. If you time it right, you can coincide the show with the annual Christmas tree lighting in Balboa Park, also on Sunday the November 25, at 5pm.
