The Timken Museum of Art, located next to the San Diego Museum of Art, offers the perfect opportunity to see high-quality art from Europe and the United States for the low, low price of…free. Its small jewel-like collection (perfect for short attention spans) is the only place in San Diego where you can always find great paintings by Rembrandt, Jacques-Louis David, François Boucher, Il Guercino, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Benjamin West.

First opened in 1965—oddly, in a building that doesn’t resemble any of the other Spanish-inspired architecture in Balboa Park—the museum houses the outstanding collection amassed by sister spinsters Ann and Amy R. Putnam, who, prior to 1950, had given all their best art to the Timken’s larger neighbor.
