Although life in San Diego often feels as a breeze, the severe issue of thousands of families suffering in homeless conditions persistently looms and affects many around us. Family homelessness demands our attention and deserves it, too. As many simply brainstorm solutions to the problem, North County Solutions for Change is actively pursuing the ways to grab our attention and give a voice to hundreds of homeless children in the area.
The sound of our community coming together with the collective vision of yielding hope to the homeless families comes from the five-time Grammy award winner Christopher Cross. This legendary musician is using his outstanding voice and recognized talent for the good of the cause as he headlines the Benefit Rock Concert on October 16th at Vista’s newly renovated Moonlight Amphitheater.
Christopher Cross’ talents have propelled him through quite a renowned path in the industry, distinguishing his caliber high above others. Concert-goers and activists alike can enjoy some of Cross’ Grammy and Oscar-winning hits, such as “Sailing,” “Ride Like the Wind,” “Never Be the Same again,” and “Arthur’s Theme (Best You Can Do)” which he performed for the film Arthur starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. The efforts from North County Solutions for Change fuse together on this night to give some star-power to a critical cause in need of our community’s recognition.
Founded in 1999, the North County Solutions for Change has situated itself as a driven social purpose enterprise, established for the sole purpose of solving family homelessness. Developed around a specific model called the Solutions University, the organization is run by social entrepreneurs, perseverant in their aim to engage both the families and surrounding communities in a solution to homelessness. And they don’t take this goal lightly. Within its first decade of existence, Solutions for Change have helped over 550 homeless families move into good homes, attain jobs, and live within the resources for maintaining a stable and healthy home.
The “Finding Our Way Home” initiative launched in April of this year, with the commitment and value to developing and providing affordable homes for 200 families and 400 children in 1,000 days. This momentous proposal further pushes the cause by also equipping parents with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to solve homelessness permanently. Community partnerships have been formed with the public and private sectors, engaging fourteen leaders to serve on a regional leadership team. The feat is not small, and the heart behind it isn’t either. Christopher Cross and the Benefit Concert further serve to propel the visibility of both the problem and the paths to solutions.
