Best San Diego Attractions: From Birch to Balboa

Published : 2/8/2008 by Jill Harness

The diverse city of San Diego is fortunate to be home to beautiful beaches, parks, and mountains. As if that wasn't enough, we have amusement parks, museums, zoos, and more. With so many attractions, it's hard to narrow down the options for fun and mentally stimulating activities that adults and kids can enjoy all at once.

A fun and educational entertainment idea is a trip to the San Diego Aquarium. At the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, you can explore the beauty of ocean animals across the globe and take in stunning views of San Diego's own breath-taking coast line. Revel at the feel of sea anemones sucking on your fingertips in the outdoor tide pool or study the beauty of the otherwise terrifying jellyfish. The aquarium is also a great place to learn about the ocean and its effect on our lives. Revolving exhibits tell tales of animal camouflage in the wild, and how global warming is affecting the world below the waves.

If you or the kids are more into life above ground, you may want to spend a day, or twenty, exploring Balboa Park. Main attractions at this beloved San Diego park include the world famous San Diego Zoo, the historical Prado Restaurant, Reuben H. Fleet Space Science Center and Theater, the Museum of Man, San Diego Art Museum, San Diego Natural History Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and more. The museums are frequently bringing in new wonderful exhibits, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the art of Dr. Seuss, and photographs from Annie Leibowitz. With so many things to do in the park, it can take months to explore everything. The western side of the park has no big museums, but offers some of the best nature views and trails in all of San Diego, as well as volleyball courts, playgrounds, and even a lawn bowling field. Check out Balboa Park photos here.

If someone in the family is the engineering or roller coaster enthusiast, a trip to Legoland may be just what you need. Exploring miniature replicas of huge cities world-wide can make you feel like Godzilla, while observing roller coasters developed by Lego technology can help put things back in perspective. Statues across the park will have your stopping in awe, asking "how did they do that, and how can I become a professional Lego builder?"

No matter what San Diego attraction best matches your mood, you're sure to have a great time when visiting San Diego. Before you map out play - first decide where to stay. Discover the best chain and boutique hotels in San Diego.
