Best Summertime Art and Culture Events in San Diego

Published : 6/3/2008 by Angella d’Avignon

There's no doubt San Diego is a city of art and culture.

With the rising affinity for combining San Diego nightlife with art, we can get our culture fix and fun all at the same event. Whether it's a live painting while a band plays at a bar or a fashion show featuring styles from local boutiques, each Renaissance Event promises a good time with a worthy cause.

Warm summer days only melt into warm summer nights, enabling us locals to play longer. This summer we encourage you to give in to your preference to party immersed in art and culture with these top San Diego events we love.

Thursday Night Thing (TNT) at MCASD
On the first Thursday of every month the downtown sidewalks surrounding Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) become filled with art enthusiasts. During Thursday Night Thing, the sophistication of the art world embraces the public with this free event, showcasing artists from Tijuana and San Diego. Starting at 7pm this little patch of downtown glows and swells with a diversified range of experiences, from slide jams to DJ lessons and poetry readings to live bands and artist talks. For more info, visit MCASD. Check out Thursday Night Thing photos here.

Ray at Night in North Park
For a more local, casual, DIY-scene inspired event, North Park is the place to be the first Saturday of every month. The Rubber Rose always promises a cozy party with its walls that transform with each artist they display. Coupled with the exhibit is a local band or musician, giving the event the intimate feel of a house party. The parking lot outside the art space is always teeming with booths and super interesting people, all gently framed under those notorious palm tree and pink flamingo string lights. Make sure to check out new, outrageous street style from Disconnected Salon. For more info, visit Ray at Night.

Kettner Nights in Little Italy
Inspired by Thursday Night Thing just down the street at MCASD, Little Italy hosts Kettner Nights, a monthly celebration of the art and design district abloom on Kettner in Little Italy. On Friday, June 6 check out Perry Meyer Fine Art, Scott White Gallery and more neighborhood design studios and art galleries. For more info, visit Little Italy events.

Art Around Adams
Take a summer stroll Adams Avenue from Normal Heights to Kensington on Saturday, June 7 from 3 to 10pm for Art Around Adams. This annual art and culture event features 75 businesses and varying displays of art with a local music backdrop at such venues as Crossing Tracks Gallery and Art of Framings. For more info, visit Art Around Adams. Check out Art Around Adams photos here.

The Athenaeum A-List

Thought to Pop
The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, located in the heart of La Jolla is a prestigious art library that holds one-of-a-kind art events. At The A-List, Thursday June 26th at 7:30pm, come see a colorful Thought to Pop featuring comic art by Jim Lee, Carlos D'Anda, Richard Friend, and JJ Kirby.

Inspired by the coming San Diego Comic-Con 2008, dress as your favorite superhero or comic book character and dance to the musical stylings of DJ OMG and live "space pirate" music by Hellhound while sipping comp-cocktails and Karl Strauss beer. For more info on Thought to Pop, visit The Athenaeum here.
