First he won our hearts playing the adorably goofy jock Troy on NBC’s comedy series Community. Now he’s tugging on our heart strings yet again with his…filthy rap music?
Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, is spitting rhymes in the big leagues. Having already rapped impressive venues like New York City’s Bowery Ballroom and The Fillmore in San Francisco, Childish Gambino is bringing his act to House of Blues San Diego on Friday, July 22.
Under the name he found using a Wu-Tang Clan name generator, Childish Gambino has released five albums under the radar. Recently released this year, his EP featuring a song entitled ‘Freaks and Geeks’ is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason. Since posting the music video for ‘Freaks and Geeks’ (a first for the actor/rapper), Childish Gambino has received shout outs from the likes of Jimmy Fallon, The Village Voice and NYMag.com.
A mix of head-bobbing beats and smart, funny, lyrics (most of them we can’t print), Childish Gambino will have you dancing and laughing all at once. With gems like “Took the G out your waffle, all you got left is your ego” and “I’ve been doing this ever since Harry Potter was new,” the real-life Glover is as irresistible as he appears on screen.
Hailing from Stone Mountain, Georgia, Glover was first a writer for 30 Rock before snagging his current Community gig. With time off in-between shooting the show, Glover has embarked on his I Am Donald tour, a unique mix of comedy and rap music. Blending stand-up stylings as seen on Comedy Central and Derrick Comedy and adding his Childish Gambino music, so far the tour has been a huge success. As Glover says in his own words, “Stand-up plus music equals dopeness.” We agree man, we agree.
