The Gipsy Kings are a music group from France with strong Spanish Flamenco influences.
They’re best known for bringing Rumba Catalana (a pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music) to audiences across the globe. It has been described as “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.” Translation: infectious grooves with Latin flavor you can salsa dance to. You’ll recognize “Bamboleo” and their cover of “Hotel California” as used in “The Big Lebowski.”
A big bonus for this music tour is that you can catch it on one of two nights, at one of two North County casinos spread five months apart.
The first night starts at 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at San Diego Pala Casino Resort and Spa, 21+, tickets will run you between $75-$95. Owned by the Pala band of Mission Indians, this is a 450,000-square-foot casino with 2,250 slots, more than 85 tables and a high-limit room to make the winning/losing go faster. They also offer eight restaurants, 507 rooms, and music venues that include a 2,000-seat outdoor concert venue, the Grand Cabaret, and the Pala Events Center, which features concerts and sporting events.
Night two graces the grounds of the San Diego Valley View Casino at 8pm on Thursday, August 14, 2008, also 21+ for $90. The San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians proudly own the Valley View Casino. The southwestern adobe-style venue is situated on a scenic plateau. The 46,000-square-foot casino features more than 1,250 slot machines (portions of which are smoke free) and a dozen high-limit gaming tables are waiting for the adventurous types. The Market Square Steak and Seafood Buffet is the place to eat, hands down. The Sports Bar is the place to drink - when you’re not at the tables.
