Top Pick: CSS Live Concert at 4th & B

Time and again, 4th and B brings in a diverse range of music to rock the stage. Upcoming shows to enjoy this fall include Bush and Chevelle, Cut Copy, and the 91X Resurrection Party. With so many eclectic sounds filling one space, the approaching CSS show will fit right at home.

A little Portuguese flavor mixed into our usual sound systems never hurt any San Diego ears. Hailing from Brazil, CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy or “Got Tired of Being Sexy”) comes to 4th and B on Friday, October 7th at 9pm. The major draw of this show is the recent debut of their third and much-anticipated album La Liberacion, combining lyrics in both English and Portuguese for a truly unconventional sound.

Recorded in Sao Paolo, the album features contributions from Ratatat and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie. It’s said to merge a bit of their 2003 riotous anarchy screams and the musical maturity of their 2008 album Donkey, and came after a much-needed return to their home from avid touring. CSS has been labeled as part of the explosion of the New Rave scene, drawing legions of international followers entranced by a universally accessible, original and off-the-wall look and style.

The five members have spent most of their musical careers playing in festivals, known for day-glo cat-suits, glitter and ragetastic dance music. Their songs are filled with pop culture and sexual references, transforming them into both online sensations and live hits. CSS has even found themselves on the road with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Klaxons, Ladytron, and Diplo on a world tour.

La Liberacion is said to be a celebration of friendship, revisiting childhood memories, and failing relationships all in one. The other side of the album shows the band’s matured side, far beyond their original sound. “Echo Of Love” and “Partners In Crime” both show realized psychedelic and acoustic influences, the latter featuring Mike Garson, who played piano on David Bowie’s “Aladin Sane”.

Experience the new album for yourself, live at 4th & B on October 7th. Get tickets here.
