Day of the Dead at the San Diego Museum of Man

Published : 10/11/2007 by DiscoverSD

The San Diego Museum of Man will host the second annual Day of the Dead celebration on Sunday, October 28, 2007. The origin of this longstanding Mexican celebration can be traced back to indigenous populations, such as the Aztec and Maya. Traditionally, Day of the Dead is a time to remember and honor loved ones. Families and communities erect altars for deceased family members. The altars are typically decorated with sugar skulls, photographs, fruit, flowers, bread, candles, religious figures, and cut paper.

The Day of the Dead event at the San Diego Museum of Man begins with the construction of altars at 8am. Altars will be available for viewing in the Museum's outdoor central plaza throughout the day. From 5pm to 8pm, guests can enjoy event festivities such as authentic food, performances, and a special Dias de los Muertos slide presentation by Grace Johnson, emeritus curator of Latin American Collections for the San Diego Museum of Man. Take-home art activities will be available for children and families, and visitors will be able to participate in an art auction.

The Day of the Dead event is free for Museum of Man members, $5 per person for visitors with membership cards from other Balboa Park institutions, and $10 for the general public.

Visit the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park for more information.
