Did pigeons descend from T-Rex? Find out at the newest IMAX
film, Dinosaurs Alive!, now
screening daily at Balboa Park’s Reuben
H. Fleet Science Center. Presenting the latest paleontological findings
from Mongolia’s Gobi Desert
and the buttes of Ghost Ranch, New
Mexico—two major hotbeds (literally!) for fossil
hunting—Dinosaurs Alive! attempts to
uncover the missing link between the largest and most powerful creatures ever
to roam the Earth and our lighter-than-air feathered friends.
A number of things make this 50-minute film more engaging
than the many dinosaur docs shown on the Discovery Channel every day. First,
it’s narrated by an old dinosaur in his own right, Michael Douglas. Second, it interweaves ultra-realistic and
scientifically accurate CGI footage of dinosaurs fighting, hunting, and nesting
(like birds) with scenes of real-life excavations on some of the most
unforgiving and isolated terrain on the planet. And lastly, unlike the Jurassic Park film, it doesn’t lean on
the afore mentioned “popular” dinosaurs like T-Rex to generate mass appeal.
Rather, it highlights rarely seen and relatively obscure ones like the equally
menacing Tarbosaurus, the diminutive Coelphysis, and various feathered
dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs aren’t your thing? Then grab a date and let the
