Just because you’re a parent, it doesn’t mean you have to spend New Year’s Eve on the couch. There are some unique events happening — from kid-friendly pizza parties to meditation circles.
Here’s a look at some creative ways to spend your last night of 2012.
New Year’s Bash — Beats, Patterns and Rhythms
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The New Children’s Museum, 200 W. Island Ave., downtown. Free with general admission. thinkplaycreate.org
This doesn’t technically happen on New Year’s Eve, but the museum’s annual New Year’s Bash gets you ready for the party circuit. This year’s theme is street art, and it features music and dance performances, hands-on art workshops, live graffiti art and more.
Kids’ New Year’s Eve
10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. Legoland California, 1 Legoland Drive, Carlsbad. $68 to $78. (760) 918-5346 or california.legoland.com
Keeping small children up until midnight isn’t the greatest idea, which is why Legoland California’s annual party has its “brick drop” at 6 p.m. The event also features high-profile kid bands — Aaron Nigel Smith and the Fundamentals, Secret Agent 23 Skiddoo, Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band, and Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players — performing from 2:30 to 5:45 p.m. And, of course, there will be plenty of family-friendly activities happening throughout the park to make them good and tired by 9 p.m.
Alternative New Year’s
7:30 p.m. to midnight Monday. WorldBeat Cultural Center, 2100 Park Blvd., Balboa Park. Donations accepted. worldbeatcenter.org.
Bring “Positive Hope” to your 2013 at this all-ages celebration of life. There will be Aztec dancers, a drum circle, Qi Gong, music by Breath of Life Tribe and a midnight ceremony and meditation. Vegetarian food will be available.
New Year’s Eve on the Square and Grape Drop Countdown
8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday. Town Square Park, 41000 Main St., Temecula. Free. (951) 694-6444 or temeculaevents.org
The City of Temecula hosts an evening of family-friendly entertainment and fun with live music from Safety Orange, Cloud and more. There will be two grape-drop countdowns, one at 9 p.m. and another at midnight. For the really little ones, Pennypickle’s Workshop, Temecula Valley Children’s Museum, will hold a New Year’s Eve at noon.
Family-Friendly New Year’s Eve Bash
6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday. Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa. 5480 Grand Pacific Drive. $30 to $115. (760) 827-2400 or sheratoncarlsbad.com
Celebrate the “Roaring ’20s” at this popular family celebration that has plenty of kid-approved entertainment. You’ll find football, face painting, video games, pingpong and crafts for young ones. There’s also dancing, live music and a buffet for the older folks. Sparkling drinks — alcoholic and not — will also be provided.
