If you gobbled up The Devil Loves Prada you are going to feast on The September Issue.
The September Issue is the documentary by R.J. Cutler starring the formidable Editor in Chief of Vogue Magazine, Anna Wintour. With New York, Rome and Paris as a backdrop, Cutler brings you into the most intimate moments of the fashion world as Ms. Wintour and her team produces the most important issue of the year, you guessed it, the September issue.
Although The Devil Wears Prada (TDWP) and The September Issue have incredible similarities, there are two major differences between the movies. One, you can peak into Anna Wintour's humanity while Miranda Priestley seems unshakably stoic. In this documentary you can see Ms. Wintour's passive aggression, her annoyance, her smiles and discomfort, her love for her children, her expressive face, her (few) mistakes.
The second differentiation is the fashion. Besides Anna Wintour, not once do you see an employee in the offices looking especially stylish or even wearing noticeable make-up. And where Meryl Streep's attire throughout TDWP is flawless, there were at least two outfits of Anna's (in a film with few wardrobe changes) that either bored me or just looked like a mismatched Ross purchase.
Moving beyond movie comparisons, the documentary is utterly fabulous. I may be biased because I adore fashion and love Vogue, but I was truly impressed with its execution. The editing was fantastic, the content yummy and the visuals stunning. Top it off with a spectacular soundtrack and I am itching to own the film before it even hits theaters Friday, September 11, 2009.
My favorite part, besides the photo shoots of course, was the unexpected star and creative director of Vogue Grace Coddington. Whereas Anna Wintour is not someone I would want to have a personal relationship with, I would love to have a cocktail with Grace. Her passion, talent, humor and ability to take on Anna Wintour are a breath of fresh air in this high-end world where joy is a scarce emotion and tension is the norm.
Fashion is a religion, and this is the bible.
