New: Foodie Friday at La Jolla Playhouse

While in everyday context a medical office may seem anything but idyllic, Sleeping Beauty Wakes succeeds in transforming a mundane sleep disorder clinic into the magical setting for a true modern day fairytale, now playing at the La Jolla Playhouse.

A contemporary take on the traditional fable, Sleeping Beauty Wakes is a musical about a princess who visits a state-of-the-art sleep clinic after a 900-year-long slumber. When the royal father brings his sleeping daughter into the facility, he commands the doctor to read her dreams in hope of clarity. But later that night, a funny thing begins to happen; fellow insomniac patients and staff begin to share her vision and live her dream, as identities transform and an unlikely romantic suitor arrives. The musical plays with the liminal space between fantasy and reality, with a score by GrooveLily.

Due to popular demand, Sleeping Beauty Wakes was extended to run through August 28, giving you plenty of opportunity for summer fun.

During the month of August the La Jolla Playhouse is hosting a variety of special events, including the upcoming Foodie Friday on August 12. A great way to combine nightlife allure with cultural indulgence, Foodie Friday is a pre-show series that features the area’s top food trucks and craft breweries in a casual setting outside the auditorium. Whether you prefer your performing arts with a good buzz, or you’re looking to switch up your regular routine this Friday, discover a new side of the theatre experience with Foodie Friday. On August 12, Chop Soo-ey, Devilicious, and Corner Cupcakes will ride up to the Playhouse, as Stone Brewing Company creates craft beer tasting stations. This pre-show party is free for all ticket-holding guests, including a complimentary microbrew, starting at 6pm before the evening performance of Sleeping Beauty Wakes.

Sleeping Beauty Wakes tickets start at $20 for ages 30 and under, and are available at lajollaplayhouse.com.
