More than a foot of snow fell in the mountains this past weekend, much to the delight of skiers and snowboarders headed up to resorts like Bear Mountain and Snow Summit to cash in on a rare Southern California commodity: fresh powder.
Boasting one of the largest snowmaking systems in the world, Big Bear Mountain Resorts expanded on Mother Nature's generous helping of the fluffy stuff and will continue to make snow for several days. That means lots and lots of good, soft snow, which skiers and boarders love because, well - it doesn't hurt as much when you fall down. It also means Big Bear can open more and more areas to ski/snowboard down every day.
After enduring one of the driest winters on record last season, the weekend snowstorm may be a good sign. It's definitely a great start to the 2007-2008 season.
Right now Big Bear Mountain Resort has 16 lifts open and at Bear Mountain's "The Park" - one of the most highly rated snowboard parks in the country, they have built over 35 features, including the newly unveiled jib designed by professional snowboarder Simon Chamberlain. They also have a ton of events coming up including December 15th's "Peanut Butter & Rail Jam" (Volcom's amateur snowboard contest series) and the unveiling of pro boarder Seth Huot's signature jib. Food, prizes, and signature shredding will be provided.
Be sure to check the road conditions before you head up to Bear. Chains are often required in the mountains as conditions can change quickly, leaving you stranded in a turnout crying pathetically in your car as your cell phone laughs at you for thinking it would actually get a signal at 6,000 feet.
