Memorial Day Perspective


Observed on the last Monday of May every year, Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service. This holiday was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the Civil War, and has since expanded to remember American casualties of any military action. Learn more.


Recommended Memorial Day Ceremonies in San Diego


Balboa Park: Memorial Services at the Vietnam Memorial at Balboa Park are offered Saturday – Monday. On Monday, there is a closing ceremony at 7:30am. Details here.


Coronado: The Coronado Navy League, Coronado Military Officers Association of America and VFW Post 2422 will host a 10am service at Coronado Star Park with Adm. Thomas Kilcline – commander of Naval Air Forces. 1121 Star Park Circle


La Jolla: Located at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial, this presentation will honor the late Army General George Smith Patton Jr., with a keynote speech from Brig. Gen. Angela Salinas – the commander of Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South


Point Loma: Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery hosts the Annual Memorial Day Service and Day of Remembrance ceremony at 10am with guest speaker Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli – deputy commander of Naval Special Warfare Command. 


Solana Beach: VFW Post 5431 hosts an honorary ceremony at Veterans Memorial in La Colonia Community Park from 11am-noon at 715 Valley Avenue.
