Poodle skirts, greased hair, ice cream parlors, and high school sweethearts are just some of the memories from the globally adored, musical sensation Grease.
Nostalgic musical Grease makes a lightening stop in San Diego March 3-8, 2009 at the downtown San Diego Civic Theatre.
The 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway musical captured the world's attention with its feisty high school love story featuring the once young and slick-haired John Travolta and the dashing Olivia John-Newton, in a nostalgic 1950s musical extravaganza. Now, with a new star-studded cast featuring a few of SoCal's very own locals, Grease is making its way to San Diego this March.
A taste of summer and a slice of young love are the perfect way to kick of the spring season, and Grease has all of that, and then some. This is one not-to-be-missed cast featuring American Idol's Season Five winner Taylor Hicks as "Teen Angel," as well as locals Brian Crum (School of Creative and Performing Arts graduate) playing "Doody," Kate Morgan Chadwick (Francis Parker High School alumna) as "Frenchy," Kelly Felthous (Vista High School grad) as "Marty," and Carlsbad resident Jim Jacob, the co-creator of Grease the Broadway musical.
San Diego Gets Greased
With rock ‘n' roll on the rise in the late 1950s, teens began to break the mold of conformity and create a cultural revolution. Grease follows a young and in love couple Danny and Sandy, with a few of their Rydell High School buddies along for the ride, as they morph and shape the ways of youth culture with social gangs, drive-in theaters, and late-night rendezvous. In this extremely genuine re-creation of the early rock ‘n' roll era, the lives of the adolescent working-class are examined and picked apart, with an in depth view about teenage pregnancy and gang violence. These raw and aggressive subjects are infused with themes of love, friendship, social class disputes, and teenage rebellion, all of which are tucked neatly in crooning melodies and hip 1950s choreography.
Songs never before heard in a Broadway production including "Sandy," Academy Award nominated "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and #1 hits on the Billboard Top 100 list "Grease," and "You're the One That I Want" will make their debut alongside the beloved classics: "Summer Nights," and "Greased Lightning.”
Whether Grease is a guilty pleasure or a nostalgic comfort, this show is sure to make you boogie in your seat. Running March 3-8, 2009 at the San Diego Civic Theatre, this is one production that should not be missed. Visit BroadwaySD.com for tickets.
