Anyone who has followed Padres baseball over the past three seasons knows that pitcher-friendly Petco Park practically becomes a band box for day games, especially as San Diego coastal temperatures rise when summer draws near.
This Thursday, June 21, not only happens to be first day of summer, but the second installment of my favorite recurring promotion: 2-for-1 Days.
Every Thursday daytime game this season, the San Diego Padres marketing gurus hope to draw thousands of cubicle warriors out of their rat mazes by offering 2-for-1 seats in the Petco Park Upper Reserved and Toyota Terrace Reserved sections, as well as 2-for-1 deals on hot dogs (sadly, veggie dogs are not included). That more than makes up for online ticket purchase fees, and even leaves you spare change for the Trolley or Coaster (parking is still full price). I highly recommend advance ticket purchase—unless, of course, you don’t really plan on watching the game. Start time is 12:35 p.m.
For the inaugural game of the promotion last April, I enjoyed seeing the hitting-impaired Pads light up the scoreboard, defeating the Arizona D-Backs 11–6. This Thursday’s game features a rare San Diego visit by the cellar-dwelling Baltimore Orioles in an interleague matchup.
Future 2-for-1 day games (which aren’t televised locally, by the way) include:
July 5, against the feisty Florida Marlins
Aug. 2, against the tough Arizona Diamondbacks (again!)
Sept. 20, against the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates
