Along with the Old Globe in Balboa Park, the La Jolla Playhouse is one of two San Diego-based theatrical meccas east of New York’s Broadway.
Originally founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, and Mel Ferrer as a “little summer-stock theater,” the La Jolla Playhouse was reborn in 1983. Since then, its campus has evolved to encompass three different stages: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum, and the newly opened Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre at the Jacobs Center. Many of the Playhouse’s original and highly innovative plays and musicals have garnered Tony Awards and traveled to Broadway and beyond.
