The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus gives a new spin to a longstanding San Diego holiday tradition. Seeing Handel's Messiah artfully performed by a talented symphony and chorus always gets me in the Christmas spirit, and singing along at the top of my lungs always gets me dirty looks from the elderly couple in front of me.
I'm always thinking they should be grateful they weren't sitting in front of my friends and I during the candlelight mass the year we had too much eggnog. You'd think singed hair would ruin the mood but it turned it into a night we would never forget, but I digress. Apparently I'm not alone in my need to sing-a-long. As it turns out, not only do the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus not mind- they even encourage it!
As you walk in the door of this holiday event, you will be asked which part you'd like. For men, you're either a bass (think James Earl Jones), a tenor (Justin Timberlake), or a baritone (somewhere in between). For the women, you only have to know whether you sing like a Disney character or not (soprano vs. alto).
The La Jolla Chorus members are mixed in with the audience, so when you sing loudly and off key - they will sing louder and on-key, thereby nullifying your lack of pitch.
And yes, if you don't want to sing, you don't have to. You can just sit quietly in your seat and stare at the oboe player... seriously... oboe players are hot.
