The La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, the oldest community orchestra in San Diego, performs at Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in La Jolla.
They are a local non-profit musical performance group specializing in ground-breaking orchestral and choral music like last season's amazing premiere of Philip Glass' Cello Concerto.
In addition to being phenomenal musicians, many of the members are also pillars of the community filling important roles as doctors, lawyers, professors, and small business owners. These hidden musicians among us volunteer there free time to "inspiring San Diego with the joy of music."
There next performance entitled "...so it goes," conducted by Music Director Steven Schick begins with Ingram Marshall's "Kingdom Come," a moving elegy to victims of the Bosnian conflict that incorporates the composer's recordings of a Croatian hymn, a liturgy from a Serbian church, and a song fragment sung by a Bosnian Muslim. The composer will be in attendance.
The second piece will be Sergei Prokofiev's "Violin Concerto No. 1" as performed by this years' Young Artist Competition Winner, Pasha Tseitlin, one of the most promising young violinists today.
Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" is a fitting ending to the concert as it tells the story of an artist who poisons himself out of despair over a hopeless love. Perfect for Valentine's Day.
The performances take place February 9-10, 2008 in Mandeville Auditorium at UCSD. Concert times are Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 3:00pm. A pre-concert lecture, led by Eric Bromberger, is one hour prior to concert times. Ticket prices are $26, $22 and $15. Parking is free.
