Ever feel like you just need a break? Canned from work, dumped by your significant other, parking tickets, a nagging neighbor; those obstacles that life likes to throw at us every now and then, making a person wish he or she could just hurl it right back, maybe in the form of that delicate vase mocking you from your dinner table.
Not to say that picking up the shattered pieces from the floor would be fun, but let's face it: every so often even the most passive people can get the urge to hurl a plate through the air, and it was, perhaps, during one of these fine moments that Sarah Lavely had an epiphany and decided to create an asylum where we finally can let loose - without the clean up.
In a chic little downtown shop along 6th Avenue sits Sarah's Smash Shack, inviting patrons with a colorful neon sign. To the average passerby, it might be easy to mistake Sarah's Smash Shack as the latest boutique on the block, but stroll down the hall and one will quickly realize that all those cute little delicates adorning the front of the store will soon be demolished by the Shack's enthusiastic patrons.
In order to participate, guys and gals suit up head-to-toe in coveralls and protective head gear - and with good reason. Sarah's Smash Shack's menu includes items from plates to attractive wine glasses to "The Boomerang" vases, which have a tendency, as the menu describes, to "come back at you."
Sarah's also offers a "corking fee," which is a BYOSB, or bring your own stuff to break, and patrons can choose to bring photos, which Sarah's will gladly frame for a customer's annihilating satisfaction. In addition to shattering plates, glasses, vases, and "The Mystery Box," which is a treasure trove of stuff for destruction, patrons are encouraged to bring their own demolition soundtracks in the form of IPods, or MP3 players.
Each Break Room is designed for extreme mayhem, and encourages guests to go all out, as the metal wall at the other end makes for great breakage, whether hurling that photo of your despised ex, or just enjoying the use of a ceramic plate as a good ole' fashioned Frisbee. Large groups are also supported, from bachelorette parties to birthdays, and don't be surprised to see a congregation of corporate employees out on "break" at the Smash Shack in San Diego.
