There is only one convention that has the power to bring together dudes from all over the country, and its name is Lebowski Fest. Rolling into town (not on the Sabbath) July 26-27, Lebowski Fest features a movie screening, a concert, an entire night of bowling, and so much more.
Lebowski Fest, now enjoying its 9th annual nationwide tour (seriously!), was created by two men (self-tagged the “Founding Dudes”) in Louisville, Kentucky. As vendors at a tattoo and piercing convention, Scott and Will found themselves with time on their hands. Their product not selling, Scott and Will decided to trade favorite quotes from The Big Lebowski. After repeating the same quotes for hours, they never found themselves bored; on the contrary they saw other people from the convention joining in on the movie discussion.
Here, a glorious idea was born. Scott and Will rented out a bowling alley, made flyers, and held their first Lebowski Fest. Success. The next year, they took the Fest on tour, travelling to several major cities. The tour has only expanded in the last 8 years, reaching even more cities this year, San Diego included.
The Fest lasts for two days in each city. This year, San Diego’s first day will be held at the House of Blues where patrons who pay the $17.50 will catch a screening of The Big Lebowski and listen to live music afterward.
The second day is, of course, at a bowling alley: Kearny Mesa Bowl, to be specific. Here, patrons who pay a larger $25-30 sum will enjoy costume contests, White Russians, all-night bowling, and promised guest appearances (which are still TBA). From the Jesus to Saddam Hussein to the Dude, Fest-goers are more than accurate with their costumes. Often times, you may think you see John Goodman only to realize it’s an impersonator and perhaps you are one White Russian over your limit.
The San Diego Lebowski Fest guarantees to be a good time for anyone who has the compulsion to inject movie quotes into everyday conversation, the inexplicable urges to go bowling, dry mouth, frequent urges to protect rugs from urination, White Russian cravings, and what-have-you.
