Loews Coronado Surf Dog Competition

Wax up those surfboards and get suited up to ride some waves. Oh and grab the leash and doggy bags too, because this surf session was made for your dog’s deep sea desires. No worries if you’re no surf-diva yet, as long as you have a pooch willing to take on the challenge for you. On June 4th, more than 60 surf dogs are expected to hang ten at the 6th annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition on Imperial Beach.

All are welcome to watch man’s best friends take on the nation’s original dog surfing competition that brings in thousands of spectators from around the country. More than just tail-wagging entertainment, the surfing dog competition has become a traditional fundraiser for non-profit organizations. This year, proceeds go towards DonorsChoose.org, a forum for public school teachers to post classroom needs and project requests to supply classrooms with material essential for learning. Loews Coronado Bay Resort and the surf dog heroes have set a goal to donate $10,000 to San Diego County schools through DonorsChoose.org.

The furry, friendly fun kicks off at 10am when canines new to the waters can take surfing lessons and get their paws wet. From 11am to 1:30pm, three stages of surfing competition will take place, featuring the bravest small surf dogs, large surf dogs, and tandem surfing with dogs and humans. That’s right, you can hop on a board with your pet and join forces to win the grand prize.

This is not just another playdate in the water. Serious judging will be conducted by Mayor Jim Hanney, the Mayor of Imperial Beach, Kathleen Cochran, general manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Teevan McManus, owner of Coronado Surfing Academy, and a representative of Banfield Pet Hospital. Pups will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” The best dog surf star of each division scores great prizes, an ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, and endless bragging rights. All competitors will wag their tails home with a goody bag and competition medal.
