The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) presents the San Diego International Children's Festival, running July 27th through August 23rd. This unique festival brings the wonder and imagination that only a child can possess to the big screen for your summertime enjoyment.
This colorful showcase celebrates a variety of entertainment mediums, from live action short films to interactive and animated films in a 21-day stretch, for three weekends sent at MOPA, Comic-Con, and the San Diego Central Library downtown. And all the event elements are created with the mindset of educating children, not only in academics but in life lessons as well. Festival admission is free for everyone at MOPA in Balboa Park and the Central Library downtown. The festival is also free, with pre-arranged Comic-Con ticket admission.
The films shown range from poignant to funny: "A Day at the Zoo" by Bret Kerven details a woman with her baby at the zoo who finds that the people she encounters are just as animal as the elephants and monkeys; and "American Dream" where a girl decides to pull a heist at her school's fieldtrip to generate money for her struggling family. Others teach lessons about relationships, like "Bubbles" by Ana Zins, which follows a mother who teaches an agonizing life lesson to her daughter, yet winds up learning one of her own.
Many films will be animated, including "Beatless Nick" by Kelly Morrison, featuring a rhythm-less beatnik looking for his groove. And, the computer animated "Buddy G: My Two Moms and Me," by Margaux Towne-Colley, that combines science and the value of truth to explain the ethic of family.
MOPA's aim is to always inspire, educate, and engage a broad audience through the collection and presentation of photography and film. The International Children's Festival holds true to this aim, and also hosts free weekday morning fieldtrips for schools in the area, in conjunction with MOPA's Education Department.
