Movies Before The Mast on the Star of India in San Diego

Published : 7/18/2007 by Craig Slike

The Star of India
is the world's oldest active ship, having circumnavigated the globe 21 times, on top of countless other sea-faring adventures. With such a rich history, she rests along North Harbor Drive as the San Diego Maritime Museum's premier exhibit.

This grand ole lady offers tourists a unique experience: watching nautical themed movies while actually aboard ship. Surrounded by masts, rigging and sails, it's easy to get caught up in cinema set in similar surroundings. The movies are projected on the main sail and can be seen from both the bow and the stern.

Friday nights are adults-only Date Nights boasting a fully stocked bar. The harbor can get cold, so bring a blanket (to share, of course). Saturday nights are family nights, so no booze. They do, however, let parents and kids explore the ship and compete for prizes for the whole family.

You're welcome to come aboard at 7pm ($13 for adults, $8 for kids), but the movie doesn't begin until after the sun goes down. Remember--this isn't Imax, it's all about the ambiance. The picture and sound quality might be a little lacking, but your surroundings make up for it.

Friday Date Nights (July 13 & 27, Aug. 10 & 24) feature The Bounty in July and The Poseidon Adventure in August.

Saturday Family Nights (July 14 & 28, Aug. 11 & 25) feature Hook for the first two and Shark Tale for the last.
