New Home and New Season for Sushi Performing Arts

Published : 11/25/2008 by Alexis Griffith

Who can deny the artful beauty of Sushi? Visually stunning, Sushi stimulates the senses, creating an experience unlike any other - and no, we're not talking about your average California roll, or any roll for that matter.

In fact, though aptly named for its stunning aesthetic pieces, Sushi has nothing to do with fare, as Sushi Visual and Performing Arts invites one and all, on any plane of the art enthusiast spectrum, to experience contemporary performances by talented artists, locally and worldwide, with their "Pay What You Can," or PWYC mantra. Aside from exceptional performances, guests of Sushi can opt to pay a minimum donation of $15 dollars for the majority of Sushi's showings.

Located in a newly renovated structure in the art-loving East Village district of San Diego, Sushi began in 1980 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to an array of areas within the performing arts. A creative sanctuary for both its artists and its audience, Sushi is a space devoted to the innovative and artistic discovery between the artist and the viewer. In addition to presentation, Sushi also supports up-and-coming artists, artist's residencies, education of the arts, and provides an area for rehearsals and events.

New Home, New Season

Sushi's new East Village home and edgy season premiered with Jordan Fuch's Thicket; an intense journey that explores the connections between the human senses. Through the use of Sushi's intricate sound system, Thicket proves to be aurally and visually inciting, to both the audience and dancers.

Other shows this season will include film, audio and other artistic installations, like Beyond Theory, an exhibition staged by Siberian-based artists from November 22nd-December 20th. Fashion is not left out of the mix either, yet La Pocha Nostra's The New Barbarian Collection Winter 2008 is not your conventional fashion show, but rather an investigation of post-911 relationships acted out through incredibly costumed characters, December 6th.

Imminent shows also include little known dance theatre's Incidental Fear of Numbers, a world premiere, beginning January 15th and the explicitly titled Karen Finley's IMPULSE to SUCK, watch as performers play out the political sexual psychodrama January 29th-31st.

Check out Sushi's event calendar at sushiart.org and get in touch with your inner art enthusiast. Don't miss the upcoming San Diego performances, exhibitions and presentations this season at the brand new East Village location.
