The 28th annual Ocean Beach Christmas Parade takes a leisurely stroll through the dark. One of the few nighttime parades in San Diego, it moves along Newport Avenue from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard to Abbot Street starting at 5:05pm (OB Time) on December 1, 2007.
This year's theme is "120 Years of Ocean Beach" and will feature marching bands, floats, antique cars, and (of course) surfers. Ocean Beach tends to give everything a special twist, just to remind you that you are indeed within the borders of The People's Republic of OB. That said; don't expect a typical seasonal parade but rather one with a "beachy" flair and a decidedly laid back feel.
The parade will be followed by lighting of the sixty foot Ocean Beach Community Christmas tree as well as a small festival and live entertainment. The Parade is actually the cornerstone of about a month of holiday activities in OB, including the arrival of the Ocean Beach Christmas Tree on November 27. The community is invited to help decorate the tree November 28 and 29, from 9am to noon. A craft fair will be held the day of the parade from 10am to 3pm at Veterans Plaza (as well as every Saturday until Dec. 22), and of course Santa will be in OB each Saturday in December from 11am -2pm through the end of the month.
All featured events are free and open to the public. Get there early, or run the risk of the parking shortage turning you into a Grinch. Biking is encouraged.
