Formerly known as the Celebrity Classic hosted by Stan Humphries, the 13th Annual Cox Celebrity Golf Championship took San Diego by storm Thursday, May 19 through Sunday, May 22, at Morgan Run Resort & Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
For the past two years, the tournament has been hosted by New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, and has featured 50 top celebrity golfers, all competing for a $100,000 purse. This year’s event included a wealth of esteemed celebrities, including Carson Palmer, Marshall Faulk, Jerry Rice, Bruce Jenner, Ray Romano, Quentin Jammer, Alfonso Ribeiro, John Elway, Dan Quinn, and Tony Romo.
The Cowboys stud quarterback, Tony Romo posted a final-round 67 (-4) during the weekend’s events and won the celebrity tournament by two strokes over former hockey player, Dan Quinn. Romo, who shot a 70 (-1) during Saturday’s first-round, announced that he would donate the $25,000 purse to the Brees Dream Foundation.
Since he began his career with the San Diego Chargers, Drew Brees and his wife Brittany have remained active in San Diego through their non-profit charity, the Brees Dream Foundation, which they founded in 2003. Since its inception, the Brees Dream Foundation has committed and/or contributed more than $5 million to charitable causes in New Orleans, West Lafayette/Purdue, and San Diego communities.
Including Romo’s $25,000 donation, a total of $135,000 was raised for the Brees Dream Foundation during the tournament, which awarded money to four charities including Rady Children’s Hosptial, San Diego Armed Services YMCA, Friends of Scott Foundation, and National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Pacific South Coast Chapter.
“The number of fans and the amount of support for this tournament are each a testament to Drew Brees,” said Romo. “It’s a great tournament and I feel lucky to be a part of it.”
