The Red Bull Air Race is an international competition based on speed, skill, and precision, coming to San Diego May 3rd and 4th.
For seven years, the world's top pilots have been challenging each other in air, over land and water competing for the title of World Series Champion. Continuing on from an explosive opening race in Abu Dhabi, San Diego is the second city of ten this spring series will visit.
This thrilling competition is split into two dynamic days: Qualifying Day and Race Day. On the first day, 12 pilots will compete to make the 8 spots that will carry them over to Race Day. The second day the heat is on while the best pilots carve up the air with upside turns and high-skilled tricks.
Last season over 50,000 people came out to watch the Red Bull Air Races in San Diego and this weekend should be no exception. Our harbor provides more space for the race's arena in contrast to other more narrow tracks in the World Series and boasts one of the most challenging courses packing high speed turns, tight twists, and Air Gates that are more difficult to navigate.
Inflatable pylons known as Air Gates define the race's track. Set up according to colors that indicate which style of turn each pilot will make, these creative cones float on the surface of the bay. The pilots must navigate a low-level aerial racetrack, whipping around tight turns while gliding over the sparkling waters of the San Diego Bay.
An event like this ushers in the spirit of warmer weather by combining the pulsating atmosphere of a race with the relaxation of a beautiful day spent by the water. Spectators will be able to enjoy unbelievable views of the action from the Embarcadero Marine Park peninsulas. This race only happens once a year and all eyes will be on San Diego as the second race in the world-renowned Red Bull Air Race season takes place on our turf.
