If you've ever had the urge to go to a San Diego concert, look up at the stage and say "Hey, isn't that the kid from Columbia Pictures 1989 flick "Troop Beverly Hills" (co-staring Craig T. Nelson and Shelly Long) rocking out with Pinsky from Nickelodeon's early nineties summer camp sitcom, "Salute Your Shorts'?", then boy, do I have the show for you.
Rilo Kiley (pronounced like high-low, smiley) is fronted by former child stars Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett. Surprisingly well-adjusted for two former child stars turned current rocks stars, the pair also happens to produce surprisingly good music.
You'll swear you've heard Riley Kiley before, and you probably have. They've had songs featured on shows like "the O.C.", "Dawson's Creek", "Grey's Anatomy" and "Weeds". For a good intro into Rilo Kiley's music, download "The Good That Won't Come Out" - the first track off their 2002 release, The Execution of All Things.
As for the name, there are numerous stories ranging from turn-of-the-century Scottish athletes to death-predicting kids walking through Sennett's dreams. Personally, I think there's some poor schmuck out there name Kyle O'Reilly out there who's not getting the recognition he deserves.
Rilo Kiley plays at San Diego's SOMA (the all-ages venue) in Point Loma Friday, October 12th, at 7pm with local phenoms Grand Ole Party opening.
