October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities across the globe with the purpose to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure.
In San Diego, there are endless ways to help out and participate in the movement. October offers an abundance of diverse charity events, and we’ve narrowed down the best affairs not to miss. From Bras Across the Bay on Flagship Cruises to a Party in Pink Zumbathon, get ready to continue the fight against breast cancer.
Bras Across the Bay with Flagship Cruises and Events – October 6
Komen San Diego is kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Bras Across the Bay, hosted by KFMB TV 8 and JACK FM. Dress up in a fabulous pink outfit and board the Flagship Cruises & Events Party Boat. The evening on San Diego Bay will include live artist painting breast cancer survivors, pink cocktails, delicious bites and live music by Bushwalla. A portion of the ticket price goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help support breast health programs and treatments for the uninsured and under insured in San Diego County. Art Stomp 2012 from Boobs on the Move at Cedros Soles – October 11
Art Stomp, a “boot art” auction to stop breast cancer, will go down at Cedros Soles in Solana Beach from 6pm to 9pm. The evening will bring live acoustic music, a raffle, complimentary food, craft beer and wine, and a silent boot art auction featuring work from local artists. Brought to us by Boobs on the Move, the event will benefit The Brighter Side’s non-profit, a local organization offering various mastectomy products, wigs and head covering to uninsured and low-income women. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – Day of Fashion at the Marriott San Diego Old Town – October 13
Head to the Marriott San Diego Old Town to get inspired by this style-savvy event featuring thrilling fashion shows from 2pm to 9pm. Aside from a range of designers, top models and live performances, the event will include vendor booths with pre-holiday items to get you in the seasonal spirit, as well as a silent auction and raffle drawings. Party in Pink Zumbathon at b2be Sports & Wellness – October 19
It’s time to party for pink! Join b2be and hundreds of Zumba-enthusiasts in a continued support of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. From 6:30pm to 8:30pm, guests will have the chance to Zumba their way through the night and sweat it out for a cause. Tickets are $10 per person. Get details here.
Survivor Crop in Oceanside/Vista – October 20
The 11th annual Survivor Crop returns with another 24-hour scrapbooking extravaganza held from October 20th to the 21st. Teams of 12 will stay up all night scrapbooking a breast cancer survivor themed book, with the winning team deemed as the Ultimate Survivor. A $125 registration fee covers catered meals, snacks, a logo souvenir t-shirt, tote bag, insulated mug, equipment rentals, prizes and four make-n-takes. The event is held in a 6,000-10,000 square foot facility in Oceanside/Vista. Details of location to be announced closer to the event date and is based on registration numbers. Get details here.
Row for the Cure at North Ski Beach in Mission Bay – October 28
Bust out those paddles and oars and join the 11th Annual Row for the Cure. Open to all human-powered craft and every level, the event will move water for breast cancer. The University of California, San Diego Women’s Crew began the San Diego Row for the Cure in 2001 after losing an alumna and a Triton family member to breast cancer over the summer of 2001. Beginning with local teams and a few kayakers, the event has grown over the years to include all forms of human powered craft. Registration begins at 5:30am with the event starting at 7am. Susan G. Komen 5K Race for the Cure at Balboa Park – November 4
Show your support during the Susan G. Komen 5K Run/Walk in San Diego, taking place at Balboa Park on Sunday, November 4th at 8am. The scenic course is perfect for all ages and fitness levels. After the event, enjoy a very informative and dynamic expo with many booths, entertainment, refreshments and more. Each registered participant receives a commemorative Komen San Diego Race for the Cure T-shirt. This event draws more than 20,000 people and is truly a day of fun and celebration with live musical entertainment along the walk route. Get details here.
The 42nd Annual Mercy Ball at The Grand Del Mar – November 10
Join for an evening of fine cuisine, live entertainment, dancing and silent and live auctions. The 42nd Annual Mercy Ball benefits the breast cancer care programs for the Scripps Cancer Center at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
